SLOVENŠČINA ENGLISH O DRUŠTVU TRAJNA ABOUT TRAJNA Nevladno organizacijo Trajna je osnoval oblikovalski duo Gaja Mežnarić Osole in Andrej Koruza. V njem želimo nadaljevati naše eksperimentiranje s trajnostnimi načini produkcije in upravljanja z okoljem, v katerem živimo. trajna.com Trajna is a non-governmental organisation set up by designers Gaja Mežnarić Osole and Andrej Koruza. As an interdisciplinary collective, we wish to contribute to the development of nature- and peoplefriendly ways of production and consumption: we make up strategies, design products, set up workshops and space interventions. We are currently interested in managing the spread of invasive plants through the use of their biomass. As part of the APPLAUSE project, we are developing a line of wood and paper products from invasive plants, as well as setting up new production space at one of the abandoned construction sites in Ljubljana, which abounds in invasive plants. The site will enable us to carry on with our experiments regarding sustainable ways of production and sustainable management of the environment in which we live. trajna.com

KONTEKST CONTEXT

ENGLISH DIY furniture made from invasive plants is trespassing into our living rooms to infect us with new definitions of domesticity! Our cities, after all, are homes as well, assailed due to globalisation by the uncontrolled spread of many invasive species. The plants are there to unveil the nature of endless economic growth, which is contributing to the destruction of our living spaces. Instead of burning them or spreading fears about their destructive power, we have transformed the wood from invasive trees into a line of DIY furniture and used it as a tool to develop new circular economies both in the city of Ljubljana and elsewhere. 7

ENGLISH INHABITING A DAMAGED PLANET The furniture from invasive plants was created out of the need to extend both the definition of home and the designer s vocation when it comes to furnishing it. According to the philosopher Donna Haraway, mass production helps produce systemic homelessness by exhausting natural resources. Consequently, it is necessary to reflect on the meaning of home outside the perspective of the homo economicus or the average European man who has been thoroughly provided for. We must not wilfully ignore that we live in a time where the artificially concocted crises and the accumulation of wealth in the hands of the richest aggravate the quality of the habitat for most people and other living beings. While the words economy (oikosnomos) and ecology (oikos-logos) shared a common lexical root oikos meaning home or habitat still in ancient Greece, it seems that we have, during the development of Western civilisation, completely forgotten that the two are, in fact, inseparable. NEW PUBLIC WORKSHOP IN TOWN As a collective of designers living and working in Ljubljana, we want to contribute to the formation of new opportunities for well-being in the capital. At first sight, our focus on invasive plants may seem unusual, but it is in fact what motivates us because of the interrelation between the global market economy and the unsolicited surge of such species in our immediate surroundings. Natural resources are being abused to mass-produce consumer goods, which impoverishes the planet s ecosystems and leaves behind increasingly damaged environments. This is particularly inviting for invasive plants, which make these territories their new home. For this reason, we decided to address the root cause of their presence by designing products made from invasive plants biomass. Through the use of this material, we call for an eco-friendly way of goods production offered to us by nature. In cooperation with our closest partners, the City of Ljubljana and the public company Public company Voka Snaga, we have made plans as part of the APPLAUSE project for new production infrastructure. We intend to launch a public woodwork workshop, where a professional carpenter will help residents of Ljubljana assemble their own wooden products. They will also be able to access the assembly plans online. About twenty different prototypes were designed during the course of the project: dining table, desk, bookcase, wardrobe, coffee table/footstool, and green-roofed nestbox, to name just a few, can all be made at the woodwork workshop. 9

In če lesne izdelke v katalogih običajno obdajajo idilični pogledi na prostrane zelene gozdove, nam podobe degradiranih urbanih krajin, kjer zapuščena poslopja invazivno preraščajo drevesa trnatih gledičevk, prikazujejo drugačno sliko narave. 10

ENGLISH FURNITURE FROM NONSTANDARD RAW MATERIALS EXHIBITION OF OPEN-SOURCE PLANS The wooden products made from invasive plants, including the line of furniture, were designed as simple and, most importantly, eco- and people-friendly quality products. It was the designer Enzo Mari s project, Autoprogettazione, that served as the inspiration for our endeavours. The title literally translates to auto-designing or auto-making, which is what Mari had in mind while designing a line of furniture for the DIY user setting up a chair, desk or wardrobe with only a hammer and a few nails and planks. Unlike standard planks used by Mari, the wood from invasive plants needs special treatment. While the material is otherwise perfectly comparable to the one harvested from native tree species, it nevertheless presents us with limitations that we rarely encounter with forestharvested wood. Due to their ecosystemic advantages for the residents, not all invasive trees in cities are removed only those that are diseased or dangerous to the people. When it came to the production plans, the products dimensions were thus dictated by different factors, such as the presence of nails in the trunks, the quality of the sawn wood, and nonstandard dimensions. Such properties of the material do not correspond to the canons of the ready-made supply on the market. The list of species whose wood is deemed appropriate for use in our environment includes the tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), the honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), the black locust (Robinia Pseudacacia), the box elder (Acer negundo), and the horse-chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum). Unlike the furniture which can be bought in shopping centres or concept stores, DIY furniture is designed primarily to encourage the self-organisation, creativity, and self-sufficiency of local communities. Such furniture can prompt a series of different activities. The practice can, for example, initiate public workshops in cities, help set up design production spaces, teach children how to make furniture in school classes, and help identify invasive trees in your local district. The project represents a tool for the formation of autonomous economic cultures by giving people the right to manage and care for urban ecosystems. This is partly what drove us to shape the introductory concept of the project. Instead of pre-fabricated prototypes, our exhibition creates room to understand the context of our work and to familiarise the visitor with the instructions for the production of the furniture. The process of converting the material into the final product is represented by a stack of planks from an invasive plant the honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos). It also serves as the spot where participants can explore the catalogue including the construction plans of the wooden products. The accompanying photographs are not there exclusively to depict the formal or aesthetic value of the wooden furniture, either. They draw attention through a dystopic caricature of space and time, in which we gaze towards the sky, looking for the sun, but in vain. The sun itself is replaced by an artificially illuminated and suspended piece of furniture, pushing itself forward like a dehumanised spectre, and it is unclear whether it still has a chance to feel the ground under its feet once it has landed. While images of wooden products in catalogues are usually surrounded by idyllic landscapes of vast green forests, the photographs of degraded urban scenery, where honey locust trees are invasively growing over abandoned buildings, introduce a different perspective on nature. They depict the uncertainty, 11

Nenazadnje pa nas vabijo tudi k udejstvovanju pri aktivnostih, s katerimi podpiramo svoja življenja in življenja skupnosti, v katere smo vpeti. restlessness, or even claustrophobia, which we feel when we think of our shared future. The plans, on the other hand, provide us with some basic guidelines which suggest how this future could be inhabited with the help of the reactualisation of artisan skills. Our DIY furniture from invasive trees thus reminds us of the systemic devastation of natural ecosystems and at the same time instils hope in the resourcefulness of the residents when it comes to the creation of new, symbiotic ways of cohabitation with nature. It might not be a coincidence that we have found ourselves in the middle of a new form of invasion while preparing the catalogue for an exhibition at the world s largest furniture fair. Isolated in our homes, we are witnessing the shutdown of national borders, jobs, and shopping centres. (Inter)national measures have forced us into a situation in which it becomes even more crucial to re-evaluate what we know about the management of natural including invasive resources that surround us. The lockdown encouraged us to take part in activities that support our lives, as well as the lives of the communities in which we are involved. 12

Z INVAZIVNIMI RASTLINAMI DO LOKALNE PROIZVODNJE POHIŠTVA TOWARDS A LOCAL PRODUCTION OF FURNITURE WITH THE HELP OF INVASIVE PLANTS

ENGLISH The products made from invasive plants are fabricated as part of the APPLAUSE project, which addresses the unresolved problems pertaining to the treatment of invasive alien plants, which is in accordance with the zero-waste approach and circular economy. The line of furniture made from invasive trees is a result of the unique cooperation between the non-governmental organisation Trajna, the product designer Matija M. Biloslav, the Biotechnical Faculty (Department of Wood Science and Technology), the forestry company Tisa, the City of Ljubljana and the Public company Voka Snaga. 17

Once removed from the environment, invasive alien plants currently face either composting or burning. The project APPLAUSE introduces a completely new approach to the challenge. With the help of our partners, the project is there to explore different kinds of use for these species. We have suggested the implementation of a system dealing with the treatment of invasive alien plants, based on the education and cooperation of Ljubljana s residents as well as on three functioning principles: Do It Yourself Process with us Bring to the collection centre With the people of Ljubljana in mind, we want to facilitate the independent identification of invasive alien plants as well as the proper way to remove them and convert them into useful products. If they do not wish to do it themselves, they can pop by at their local woodwork and paper conversion centre, where we will do it together. Alternatively, they can simply give them away at a collection centre, where the project partners will convert them into useful products. 18

Drevesa so dragocena, saj čistijo in filtrirajo zrak, proizvajajo kisik in vežejo ogljikov dioksid. As the City of Ljubljana s contractor and counsellor in arboriculture, urban tree management, and urban forestry, Tisa Ltd. is aware of the importance and role of every tree in the city even if it is classified as an invasive alien species. Trees are extremely valuable: they clean and filter the air, produce oxygen, and bind carbon dioxide. Their presence improves our living, but they nevertheless need to be removed if they start to harm or endanger our health. The APPLAUSE project takes care of the felling of invasive alien tree species and the cutting of the biomass, which can, in turn, be used by our partners to fabricate wooden products. 19

SLOVENŠČINA PRIPRAVA LESA IN TESTIRANJE IZDELKOV: Biotehniška fakulteta Univerze v Ljubljani, Oddelek za lesarstvo Invazivne tujerodne rastlinske vrste predstavljajo enega večjih izzivov v evropskih ekosistemih. 3 ENGLISH PREPARING THE WOOD AND TESTING THE PRODUCTS: Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Wood Science and Technology, University of Ljubljana Invasive alien plant species are one of the biggest challenges for European ecosystems. Many such plants are daily removed and usually burned. By recognizing the potential of invasive alien plants, we aim to process these plants and convert them into useful wooden products. For innovative high-value products, it is necessary to be familiar with the properties of the raw material (wood). For this reason, we have analysed seventeen different woody plant species. In collaboration with Trajna, we make prototypes and production plans for twenty wooden products and use leftovers to produce new composite materials. The results of the APPLAUSE project have already shown that we have come up with a solution for wood waste, which can be used not only as biomass to produce energy but also as highly innovative products. 20

4 ENGLISH DESIGNING THE PRODUCTS AND CONDUCTING THE CREATIVE WORKSHOPS: Trajna Association The line of products from invasive plants includes a selection of furniture for the homes of both people and animals living near us. Due to the specifics of the invasive plants material, the furniture is designed in such a way that enables residents to assemble it with the help of a professional carpenter. The woodwork workshop supplies them with all the professional help and technical tools needed to make more complex products. Participants will also learn all they need to know when working with this kind of material. Since the products were designed with their life cycle in mind, all damaged components can be substituted with new ones. In addition, all used parts can be composted as they are biodegradable and have not been treated with any substance which would be harmful to the environment. Apart from developing wood (and paper) products from invasive plants, Trajna also conducts creative workshops, which help spread the information concerning woodwork skills, invasive plants, and the DIY culture. 21

Namen delavnic je predelati invazivne tujerodne rastlinske vrste v uporabne lesene in papirne izdelke. Obe delavnici tako predstavljata kraj, kjer tradicionalno znanje sreča izvirne ideje, in sicer v sklopu obrtniških delavnic za izdelavo izdelkov iz lesa in papirja, izobraževalnih delavnic in projektov»naredi SAM«. Delavnice so namenjene meščanom Ljubljane in so zasnovane tako, da spodbujajo krožno gospodarstvo in pristop»zero waste«. 5 ENGLISH CONDUCTING A PUBLIC WORKSHOP: Public company Voka Snaga The Public company Voka Snaga is a partner in the APPLAUSE project. As part of the project, we have established a wood workshop and a paper workshop in the centre of Ljubljana. The purpose of the workshops is to process invasive alien plant species into useful wooden and paper products. Both workshops represent a place where traditional knowledge meets innovative ideas, that is through the use of artisan workshops for making wood and paper products, educational workshops and DIY projects. Workshops target the residents of Ljubljana and have been set up to encourage circular economy and the zero-waste movement. 22

KAKO DO MIZARSKE DELAVNICE? HOW TO SET UP A WOODWORK WORKSHOP?

ENGLISH The questions below guide you to acquire the information you will need to set up a system of removing and using invasive trees in your municipality or community. It would be a pleasure to see our initiative prompt new woodwork workshops across Europe so we could all exchange knowledge and experience from practice in the future as well. Which trees are considered invasive alien plants in your country? Is there research on the charting of invasive alien plants available in your municipality? Do invasive trees grow mostly on public or private property in your district? Is there any land in your municipality which is considered common land? Who is responsible for the management of green surfaces and green waste in your municipality or community? How does your community treat the (invasive) trees which have been removed from public surfaces? According to what are these removed? Is there a covered warehouse, public sawmill, and a wood-drying facility which enable the preparation of wood for further use in your municipality or community? What other institutions or organisations in your district do have the aforementioned infrastructure? Can you access a woodwork workshop offering all the equipment needed to make furniture? Are there people in your municipality or community who feel connected through the DIY and open-source culture? What kind of knowledge and resources do you have at your disposal when it comes to the acquisition of the lacking (financial) means or resources?
