THE TERMSon of Godis key to the Christian theology of Incarnation. In Hebrew scripture, son of God denotes a person with a special relationship to God. In the New Testament the term describes the unique relationship of Jesus to God. In the Jewish sense, the whole people of Israel and the king of the nation are sons of God. Jews postbiblically began to refer to the anticipated Messiah as son of God. None of these Jewish usages implied a divine nature, only a privileged relationship. In Christian usage the title is first applied to Jesus because he saw himself that way. God is his Father: It s repeated often enough that we might just as easily say Jesus saw himself as God s Son. Clearly the gospel writers and Saint Paul used the title after Jesus resurrection appearances to say something more about Jesus than anyone had claimed before. The early church fathers drew together traditions of prophecy, Wisdom, and the Divine Word to see Jesus as sharing in the divinity of God both before his human birth and afterwards. At the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. Jesus was declared begotten of God before time began and one in being with the Father. O L J C, K U Reprinted from The Inland See for the Diocese of Burlington November 25 December 1, 2017 2018 Synod Preparation Parish Listening Session Fall 2017/Winter 2018 For Parishioners: Bishop Coyne wants your help in planning the Diocese of Burlington s 2018 Synod. All are invited to be part of the conversation as we seek to discern God s will for the Church in Vermont. FIRST Pray for the success of the Synod with the official Synod Prayer: Almighty and everliving God, You continually guide and sustain your pilgrim Church, which you established as the universal sacrament of salvation. Direct the Church in Vermont during this time of preparation for the diocesan synod. Help us to discern the signs of the time wisely, that we may joyfully proclaim the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ. May we never fail to trust that with God, all things are possible. We ask this, with the help of the Holy Spirit, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Mary, Mother of the Church, Pray for Us. SECOND Share your views during your parish listening session. Following the instructions of the moderator, offer a response to one of these three questions: 1. As the Catholic Church in Vermont, what are we doing well? 2. What are we doing that we should be doing better? 3. What are we not doing that we should be doing? THIRD Attend one of the regional listening sessions that Bishop Coyne will hold around the diocese (locations and dates to be announced). There will also be further parish sessions in 2018. Finally, if you can t attend a listening session or have more to say, give your input online at www.vermontcatholic.org/synod with the digital survey link. If you don t have access to the internet, you can send a response to the three questions, typed or neatly handwritten, to Diocesan Synod, 55 Joy Drive, South Burlington, VT 05403. Check with your pastor for the date of your parish s listening session. You Are Invited - Diocesan Synod Bishop Christopher J. Coyne is convening the synod to establish a pastoral plan for the immediate future of the Catholic Church in Vermont. This will be at least a yearlong project and is a serious undertaking by the Church, he said. It is not a simple convening of meetings. We are beginning with a parish Listening Session to address three questions: As the Catholic Church in Vermont, what are we doing well? What are we doing that we should be doing better? What are we not doing that we should be doing? Both active members and those who do not attend church regularly are welcome to attend the session, which should last approximately an hour and a half. You are invited to attend any one of the three sessions: November 30 at 7:00 p.m. at St John the Baptist December 3 at 7:00 p.m. at SHSF December 5 at 2:00 p.m. at SHSF Jesse Tree ~ Tree of Giving This weekend you will find tags on the Jesse Tree with a Christmas Wish. The Social Concerns Committee has chosen HIS Pantry to receive our help and parents/ guardians have been asked to let us know of one or two gifts (no more than $20.00 in value) their child would like. These wishes have been placed on the tree. Important Date ~ All gifts need to be returned UNWRAPPED by Wednesday, November 29. Please return the tag you took from the Jesse Tree with the gift. Thank you! Wrapping paper ~ If you can provide gift wrap separately, it would be very helpful. Please note that wrapping paper is not necessarily for the gift that you bring in. On Sunday, December 10 th, we will have our annual deanerywide Advent Penance Service at 3:00 pm at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. There will be a number of priests available. Come join us for this beautiful service of the Word and song to prepare for Christmas and experience Christ s Peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
