Page 4 I expect to pass through this world but once. Any good that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. -William Penn (1644-1718), English Quaker/leader and founder of Pennsylvania On Friday, September 18, I celebrated a funeral at Beinhauer Funeral Home in McMurray, PA for Marcel David Tourdot, Jr., a former student, whom I taught while serving at St. Thomas More in Bethel Park. He died suddenly and would have been 36 years old on the day of his funeral. Marcel s father explained to me that his son wanted Fr. Rich to be there if anything significant ever happened in his life. He went on to say, My son loved being an altar server. He also liked that you taught him religion in 8th grade. He also thought it was cool that you drove around in a red 5 speed sports car [despite taking a vow of poverty!]. My son respected the fact that Jesus was more important than girls to you. He saw you as a manly priest and a priestly man [almost as if to say we were a rare breed!] Marcel seemed to recognize that one can have a full and rich life when God is in the driver s seat. He enjoyed listening to you preach and really liked your ways. You were his hero and that is the best compliment a child can ever give a person. We are grateful for you in his life. I was touched, humbled and honored by his words, and I thought of what Pope Francis said: Everyone deserves at least one good priest in their lifetime! I am unworthy yet grateful that God could use me for His greater purpose, in touching a young life. Following the funeral Marcel s uncle spoke to me saying, Father, it s days like these that we need you the most. When did you get the call from the Lord? I told him, Eleven years ago. He continued, Whatever you do, keep answering that call in your life for the sake of others. We need you and the Lord does, too. This encounter made me pause to thank the Lord for His goodness and love, and gave me cause to be grateful for the grace to serve Christ s Body the and my brothers and sisters in Christ. Our lives do not belong to us; they have been purchased at a great price and they belong completely to the Lord. In belonging to Him, we are called to live Christian lives, poured out in love, service, and sacrifice for the wellbeing of others. In the Gospel of Mark the disciples are often portrayed as being blind, dense or dumb to Jesus identity, message, and mission. They just don t get it! When Jesus spoke of his second passion prediction of His own rejection, torture and shameful death the disciples were not present to Him. Instead, they were squabbling and arguing about who was going to be the greatest in Jesus coming kingdom. But Jesus backed them up and told them that true discipleship is not about being concerned with status, but with service to the poor, and acting with justice and peace. Time and time again, Jesus reminds each of us that true greatness is not found in externals: lofty titles, significant roles, prestigious positions, top salaries, special uniforms, extensive degrees, elite entitlements, padded résumés, places of honor at banquets, etc. Instead, it lies in the ability to be willing to serve our brothers and sisters with child-like humility, simplicity, goodness and faith. Inordinate love of self is a cause of sin because it doesn t leave room for love of others. Humility comes with being realistic about ourselves and acknowledging that what the world counts as important, is not particularly important to God. What we have received is God s call, and the capacity to reach out and look out for our brothers and sisters as agents of a loving God. True greatness lies in service and humility consists of the willingness to serve. Nothing else matters! Jesus calls us to realism, not only to realize our human limitations, weaknesses, and sinfulness, but also to be realistic about our potential for the good that is in us, which comes through God. Our God exalts and favors us, not because we have achieved importance, but because we are willing to serve others in His name. We are called not to serve our ideas or ideals, but people, out of love for the Lord. Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you (William Arthur Ward). Jesus demanded that His disciples regularly review their lives to make sure they were acting in His name and continuing His mission. So too, Jesus asks us to examine our lives: should there be any sin that leads others to sin, it must be eliminated immediately, as a true disciple s work is to take on Jesus goodness, values and life. To be a true disciple of Jesus, we must make radical choices about how we live and relate to others. Jesus never sinned, and He calls us each day, to be free of the burden of sin, so that we can travel freer, lighter and more joyfully. To answer the call of the Lord is an awesome calling, but has never been a popular one for the majority of people. Whether studying, working, eating, sleeping, through our relationships, service, prayer, or friendships, our lives should be directed toward the Lord. Each day should be an offering for His honor and glory. What is your humble service rating to your family, in your work place, to your church, community, neighbors, friends, and to God s little ones (the least, lonely, and lost) in your midst? Pope Francis visit to America (September 22-27) is a wonderful opportunity for a wake up call to a deeper faith. We all need a jolt once in a while for the good of our personal faith-journey, to help us cherish the blessings along with the challenges of family life; to unite us as a nation and the universal Catholic when power struggles and polarizations threaten to divide us. Let us pray for the blessings of universal holiness and mercy, and for the entire world, that seems to be obsessively tuned into Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Foursquare and Pinterest, to name a few internet sites and virtual communities which allow us to have friends and connections, some of whom we ve never even met. Popes have taken on many titles over the past few decades, but none is more significant than the title: Humble Servant of our Lord, Jesus Christ. On my desk is a small statue of Pope Francis. His right hand is extended outward and upward, as if to bless all who enter saying, All are welcome here! May he too, find welcoming and humble hearts here, as he visits our country. And may God bless Pope Francis and America!
