Father all-powerful, your gifts of love are countless and your goodness infinite. On Thanksgiving Day we come before you with gratitude for your kindness: open our hearts to concern for all men and women, so that we may share your gifts in loving service. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, for ever and ever. Amen. As important as it is to express our gratitude to those people in our lives who make life worth living, it is much more important not to neglect to acknowledge that God is the source of all good in our lives. Gratitude is the beginning of faith! Happy Thanksgiving Join us for Mass on Thanksgiving at 9:00 a.m. in a spirit of gratitude for all God has given to us. The preface of the Mass forms us each time we pray our prayer of thanksgiving adds nothing to your greatness but makes us grow in your grace, you have no need of our thanks yet our desire to thank you is itself your gift and makes us grown in your grace. If the only prayer you say in your whole life is thank you that would suffice. - Meister Eckhart To be grateful is to recognize the love of God in everything He has given us and He has given us everything. - Thomas Merton We Dare to Hope-2018 Annual Catholic Appeal The insert in this weekend s bulletin is the summary report of the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). Each parish within the diocese is given a financial goal based upon their annual envelope income and thus together the Diocese was not only able to accomplish its financial goal but more importantly many important ministries and diocesan agencies were funded. Thank you to all who participated in the important part of parish and diocesan life. The following is a summary of our growing momentum in reaching our goal. Do you have one hour each month to spend with Jesus before the Blessed Sacrament? We need one person present each hour during our Prayer for Vocations which is usually the first Thursday of every month from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. followed by Schoenstatt s Marian devotions and The first step to knowing Jesus Christ is to recognize our own poverty and our need to be saved. - November 13, 2018 Benediction at 7:00 p.m. If you are interested in signing up for an hour, or being a sub, contact Mary Joyce at 221-3062 or Bill Donohue at 222-0690. The 2018 Christmas Pageant will be held on Monday, December 17 at 6:30 p.m. We are looking for angels, shepherds, song leaders, and middle school children for speaking parts. Forms are available at the Faith Formation classes and the school or sign up forms are available online at our new website www.stdennisparish.org then click Ministries and then click Youth. Forms are due back Friday, November 30. Questions? Call Lisa at 438-8076. Saint Dennis Parish calendars will be available soon. During the holidays, Saint Vincent de Paul has provided Christmas presents to the children in these families through the generosity of individuals and local parishes. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is continuing the Little Drummer Boy Project this year. In recent years presents were given to almost 1,000 children in the Madison area. Share your Christmas joy. Scrip Weekends in Fellowship Hall November 17 and 18 November 24 and 25 December 1 and 2 December 8 and 9 December 15 and 16 Please read the Annual Catholic Appeal wrap-up material included in today s bulletin. This information indicates participation and performance information as well as how the funds collected will be used to meet our spiritual and material needs. Thank you to all who participated in this important part of parish and diocesan life! What Can We Do? It s No Straws November! That s what a Girl Scout named Shelby O Neil started in California. She knew that straws are a big source of ocean pollution. Straws are used for a single use then they remain in oceans or our landfill for about 500 years! Shelby volunteered in an aquarium where she learned how long-lasting straws are. Her advocacy lead to a major airline no longer offering straws unless asked (some people have health issues and need to use straws). California also passed legislation declaring this month No Straws November. This project was her Gold Award, Shelby is nationally recognized for her work. Her organization, Jr. Ocean Guardians, challenges you to refuse plastic straws in November and to keep a tally of how many straws you eliminated from ending up in the ocean, waterways, or landfills. In their inaugural event in November 2017, they recorded over 21,000 single-use plastic straws offered and almost 20,000 single-use plastic straws refused. We can say no thank you! when offered a straw. This small act can strike a conversation with those around you about recycling. Did you know plastic silverware can t be recycled? Caps to plastic water bottles can. Let s say no thanks to straws and make the world a better place. Check out the website at www.jroceanguardians.org/no-straw-november. For more ideas on what we can do to Care for Creation, join the Care for Creation Team regular meeting on November 18 after the 10:45 a.m. Mass. A reminder to all families with children who are receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time: the Reconciliation Prayer Service on Tuesday, November 27 will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. Penitents should plan on sitting with their families. Minor Home Repair Ministry has been under the leadership of Dave Dwyer and Paul Anderson. They are both retiring from this ministry. We thank them for their faithful service. For many years, they have repaired faucets, leaky toilets, outlets, light fixtures and fans. They have cleaned eaves troughs, fixed drywall, repaired storm doors and the list continues. All this is at no cost to the seniors and physically challenged individuals in our parish. We would love to keep this ministry going. If you feel you could help, Dave would be happy to introduce you to the program that has helped so many. Call the Parish Office at 246-5124 and Dave will be in touch. Thanks and blessings. Dr. Robert Enright - Criticisms of Forgiveness First in a Series - Forgiving as Disrespectful to the Forgiver One argument states that when someone is hurt by another, it is best to show some resentment because it lets the other know that he or she is being taken seriously. If forgiveness cuts short the resentment process, the forgiver is not taking the other seriously and, therefore, is not respecting the other. Nietzsche (1887) also devised this argument. We disagree with the basic premise here that forgiveness does not involve resentment. As a person forgives, he or she starts with resentment. We also disagree that resentment is the exclusive path to respecting. Does a person show little respect if he or she quells the resentment in one rather than two days? Is a week of resentment better than the two days? When is it sufficient to stop resenting so that the other feels respected? Nietzsche offered no answer. If a person perpetuates the resentment, certainly he or she is not respecting the other. When you hold resentment toward another you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free. www.stdennisparish.org Check it out! Our parish website has a whole new look! Along with a new design and easy navigation, the site also has one-touch giving, a Facebook feed, and looks great on all of your devices. You should be able to locate everything that was on the previous site, however, it might just be in a different place. You have probably already noticed that we have updated our logo and tagline as well. The logo features a cross design that matches the cross in our new church sanctuary. The fish behind the cross matches the design on our new tabernacle and the top of the altar. As for our new tagline - we are truly a Catholic church that is Centered on Christ. We hope you enjoy our new look! As weather gets colder, what inside activities do you like doing with your spouse? Reading, playing games, watching movies? Winter provides a lot of time to relax and just be together with your family. November 17 and 18 (Knights of Columbus) November 24 and 25 (Stewardship Commission) December 1 and 2 (Knights of Columbus) December 8 and 9 (Women of Saint Dennis) December 15 and 16 (Stewardship Commission) December 1 and 2 Angels will be available after all Masses for pick up. Stop back in Fellowship Hall that weekend to get your angel gift suggestion card. The Women of Saint Dennis will answer any questions and help you pick your angel for this year. Wrapped gifts are due back on the weekend of December 15 and 16. Sponsored by the Women of Saint Dennis. Questions? Call Pat at 239-1219. Are you looking for outdoor adventure and fellowship? In keeping with the tradition of Scouting at Saint Dennis, Pack 149 and Troop 149 are holding a joint open house on Monday, December 10 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Saint Dennis School Cafeteria. This event is open to all boys (Cub Scouts ages 6-10) and (Boy Scouts ages 11-17). Scouting is fun with a purpose so come join us to check out scouting. You can make your own first aid kit, decorate some cookies as well as enjoy other Scout activities. Questions? Call Mark Rodwell at (630) 487-6342 or email at mark.30338@yahoo.com. Creation is not property which we can rule over at will. Creation is a wonderful gift that God has given us to care for and use for the benefit of all, always with great respect and gratitude. - Pope Francis The Community Meal Program will be serving its traditional Thanksgiving meal at Luke House on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22. We will be serving turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy and all the fixings. There are many ways to get involved with the meal: providing food, food prep during the week of Thanksgiving, serving food, or sharing the meal. If you would like to participate in any way, contact Matt Rogge at 256-6325 or matt@lukehousemadison.org. As always, any help you can provide is greatly appreciated. Useful items include foods such as coffee, pasta, spaghetti sauce, salt, pepper, sugar, meals in a can (such as beef stew), vegetables, and canned fruit. Year-round, Luke House has an impact on many people s lives. The involvement of people from your faith community enables us to continue carrying out our mission. Thank for your continued prayers and support. November 18, 2018 5 Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

As we edge closer to the closing of the liturgical year, the Church selects readings that remind us of the final close: the second coming of Christ. It s easy, perhaps, to forget that this is a dogma of our Catholic faith. We see this dramatic end times language in today s Gospel. The sun will be darkened and the stars will be falling from the sky. As Christians and as human beings, we know all things will come to an end. But of that day or hour, no one knows. The end of the world and end of time at Jesus coming is in a future unknown. But God has given us beautiful reminders of this truth. We see the signs and symbols of ending all around us - nightfall at the end of each day; the life cycle of crops coming alive, bearing fruit, and being harvested; our own death. That, too, will come at an unknown day and hour. But that is the way of things. Even as God created in Genesis, He gave us a sense of time - the sun rising and setting, a beginning and an end - to mark our days. So how do we welcome these built-in forms of measurement? Do we take time to quietly recollect at the end of each day? Do we see every morning as a fresh start for mercies new? Do we observe the seasons and reflect on what they might be speaking to us of God and His glory? Heaven and earth will pass away, but my works will not pass away. The little beginnings and little ends are opportunities to renew our faith in Jesus, if only we have the eyes to see! Christ Child Market Experience the tradition of an Olde World Bavarian Christmas in Plain, Wisconsin! Join us on Saturday, November 24 and visit businesses on national Small Business Saturday. Shop, dine, and receive discounts and goodies for children. Horse-drawn carriage Christmas rides, elves craft s workshop, Historical Society open house and visit Saint Luke for 4:00 p.m. Mass with German hymns. On Sunday, November 25 at 5:00 p.m. herald in the Christ Child procession from Main Street to Saint Luke with Joseph, Mary, and Saint Nicholas where Christkindl Angel will appear from the front doors of the church with a trumpeter and chant followed by Christmas hymns and vocal concert.
